Forum: GratefulDead Subject: A Slice of Heaven (and why did it take so long?)

Not sure why it's still streamable, but who's complaining?

From the Grateful Dead Movie run at the Winterland, this souce may not be the best, but when the music is this good, who cares? Well, like last time, I'll just stick to a personal highlight here. The He's Gone>Truckin'/Caution Jam>Drums>Jam>Truckin' (a section I believe featured in the movie) is Deadness at its finest. With Billy and Phil providing a rock-solid nuclear infused back beat, Jerry explores territory that would strike terror into the heart of lesser men. Just amazing. So while this is still up for streaming (I can only assume this will not last for much longer), I heartily suggest you click it, crank it and crush it (with the latter being your seating arrangements, of course).

As for the why did it take so long, I only just noticed that the movie has been re-released Nov. 1 as a blu-ray disk with a DVD copy included (I've been out of the loop around here for awhile and may have missed any previous discussion of this). I had assumed this was going to happen when the movie had it's limited showing a few months back, but had just about lost hope until I saw this. Well, it's Merry Christmas to me this year. The way I see it, how can the wife argue with this as my sole request? If anyone has already gotten a copy, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the "re-mastering" and previously unreleased tidbits supposedly included.

This is on the Soundtrack 5 disc CD. Wow, no. Just no. Not a Caution Jam, the band seems tired SDH and jeez I even feel asleep during parts of that tome they call a movie. The 20th is really the only show that reaches beyond and even that is subdued. Blu-ray, no-way. Rotterdam instead, and maybe Paris, too.

As I always said, to each his own. I also agree that parts of the movie are non-remarkable at best, but as a visual snapshot of an important time for the band, I love it. Like a family picture album many of the pics may be crap, but as a whole it is irreplaceable. Hell, I'd buy it for the Overalls Dude alone. On a personal level, he embodies the feeling the band gave me many, many times and its why I'm still stumbling about this place. The perma-grin never dies.

My fav is the Garcia at Radio City Skit where he is baking goods during the break. The 10/31/80 movie is a nice and different look at the GD...

Agreed. We now have very good video representation of the band from different stages of their career, and some nice Jerry solo stuff. I too would love to see something from Europe formally released (or maybe it already has and, like so many other things, I've missed it). A cleaning up and new release of the Sunshine Daydream movie would be HUGE, but gotta love all the contractual disputes amongst the "family". But, if this new release does well, we may see more coming out soon.

The guy dancing behind Jerry on the pole kinda freaks me out. Can we photoshop him out?

Perhaps they could replace him with a CGI of something/someone. I say they have a contest to choose a possible replacement for the Naked Pole Guy.

I nominate Newt Gingrich.

I think Bernie Fine is the new pole guy, but might have to double check that. Changes so fast, hard to keep "up" ya know...

That is so wrong on so many levels...

I can't believe Rob or WT hasn't risen to the bait on this one yet...

Oh, yeah, that was freakin' hilarious, BTW.

but a complete in tact Dark Star on video from the absolute half hour jamming prime is worth tuning that guy out. Surprisingly he keeps it well tucked away behind the pole ( lots of material there folks )

the part that cracks me up is the camera zooming in on the topless women and it zooms in only to find it's a dude with long hair then quickly pans away. Think that's in China/Rider

Warning: There was a thread a couple days ago about the Blu-Ray being Region B or C (ie, not compatible with U.S. players unless one has a region-free player, which are well worth the investment IMHO). I couldn't understand why the official Dead internet store (whatever it is called these days) would sell a non-Region-A Blu-Ray (or non-Region-1 DVD), but I also can't understand the marketing strategy of trying to sell the Road Trips and Download Series "Best of" several shows compilations to an OCD customer base that generally wants not only every song from every show but the stage banter between songs as well.

I saw that as well and I was simply throwing in what I had found, no disrespect intended to anyone.
